What Does Comfort Cost?
Comfort is not simply pleasant. It is also seductive in a way that other things are not, because it arrives without announcement and departs the same way. You do not notice what you have given up in exchange for ease until the exchange has already been made. By then, the capacity you traded away has often grown quiet, and you have stopped missing it.
The writers here were not arguing for discomfort as a discipline. They were asking a simpler question: what does a life organized around the avoidance of difficulty actually look like, from the inside? Huxley answered it one way, Bradbury another. Kafka asked whether the difficulty had already happened and we had simply failed to notice.
The question is not whether comfort is bad. The question is whether it has a price, and whether you have been paying it without knowing the terms.
The Soma Problem
